About Davidson

Golf course in Davidson, NCIf good things come in small packages, then no wonder Davidson, NC is so special! The community and now town, of Davidson grew up as an extension of the Presbyterian Davidson College, which was established in 1837. The land that both the town and the college cover was once the estate of the Revolutionary hero, Brigadier General William Lee Davidson.

It is definitely one of those "Which came first/the chicken or the egg?" situations. Regardless, the presence of a young, vibrant, forward-thinking population of college students, their professors and families, has played a large role in shaping the town of Davidson. Although it is a quick 20 miles north of Charlotte, Davidson is in a league all its own. At first glance, a visitor may think they had stepped back in time, to a sleepy little small town. Main Street is certainly old-fashioned and quaint, with its ample sidewalks, charming storefronts, and containers brimming with colorful annuals. The nearby quad is a frequent gathering place for outdoor concerts, picnics, and impromptu games of Frisbee or football. In fact, green space is so important to this little community that over the last few years, the town has acquired nearly 500 additional acres of open space.

Navigating the Community

Perhaps what most sets this Queen City suburb apart is how dedicated its citizens are to creating and maintaining accessible amenities for the residents of Davidson. The town has been ahead of its time by making it easy to get around on foot or by bicycle. There is a huge network that encompasses miles of both greenways and trails and prohibits drive-thru travel. In fact, on the website, walkscore.com, Davidson received the high score of 91 and was included in the "Walker's Paradise" category!

Unlike many towns, the residents have true input into how things are done. For all new development, public input sessions are required. That way, residents have a say in how their community can change and grow in a way that will be welcomed by all.

Housing and Real Estate Affordability in Davidson

Another requirement that sets this unique little town apart is one that focuses on diversity. When it comes to new development, 12.5 percent must be deemed affordable to make living here conducive to all types of individuals.

There must be something to Davidson's action plan! In 2004 the town won the Smart Growth Award for Overall Excellence in town planning and design. Last year, it was awarded the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association's "Great Main Street" Award.

Davidson is also home to beautiful subdivisions and renowned golf communities, including the River Run Country Club which boasts a championship golf course, outdoor and indoor tennis, a fitness center, amazing pools, and event facilities.  River Run is just one of the communities that makes Davidson such a desirable destination close to Charlotte.

The fact that Davidson is located right near beautiful Lake Norman is the icing on the cake. If you'd like to explore Davidson this summer, Sundays are especially fun, with Concerts on the Green taking place from 6 to 8. Bring a picnic, get to know a few friendly locals and see why Davidson's motto is:

"College Town. Lake Town, Your Town."
